Munnar
It is a beautiful hill station on the Western Ghats at about 1600 mtrs above sea level.
Anamudi, the highest peak in south India is near to this place. Munnar was the summer
resort of British govt. in the south.
Other attractions around:
Chinar Wild Life Sanctuary – approx. 60 kms from Munnar spreads over an area
of 92.44 sq.kms. fully inhibited by wild animals like elephants, leopards, bears, gaurs,
samburs, etc.
Eravikulam National Park spread over 97 sq. kms of evergreen forest has the
rare breed of mountain goats, Nilgiri Tahr in the world.
Mattupetty famous for its highly specialized dairy farm, situated at 13 kms
away from Munnar, at an elevation of 1700 mtrs. About 100 varieties of high yielding
cattle are reared here.
Wayanad
Kalpeta is the capital of Wayanad Dist.
Sulthan Bathery: the places of interest around are:
Edakkal Caves – 12 kms from Sulthan Bathery – there are two caves located at a height of 1000 m on
Ambukutty Mala (Hill) near Ambalavayal. The New Stone Age pictorial writings on the walls of these natural caves
at Edakkal are evidence of the civilization that existed in these regions in prehistoric times. The cave can be
accessed only by approx. 1 km trek of the Ambukutty Mala. Morning is the best time and visitors are allowed
only upto 5 pm
Wayanad Wild Life Sanctuary (Muthanga) established in 1973, is contiguous to the protectedarea network
of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the northeast and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu on the southeast. The sanctuary
is rich in flora and fauna. Elephant, spotted deer, bison, tiger, cheetah, wild bear etc. can be spotted here.
Elephant rides are arranged by the forest department on payment.
Wayanad Heritage Museum, Ambalavayal: Located near the Ambukuthi hills, this heritage museum displays
artifacts and belongings of the various tribes of the land. This is one of the best heritage museums in Kerala.
Kuruvadweep 45 kms northwestof Sulthan Bathery, and 17 kms east of Mananthavady, this 950 acre,
uninhabited island on the eastward bound Kabani River is an ideal picnic spot. The wooded land is home to rare
species of birds, orchids and herbs.
Boys Town 15 kms north of Mananthavady, bosts of a herbal garden, nature care center, sericulture unit,
perma-culture center, etc. established bythe Wayanad Social Service Society, and Jean Park (the Indo Danish project
for promoting herbal gardening) are situated here.
Thirunelli Temple 32 kms northeast of Mananthavady, known as the Thenkasi (Kasi of the South Kasi of
North is Varanasi) is a marvel of traditional temple architecture. The shrine is shielded with 30 granite columns
and the ground is paved with huge square pieces of granite. The crystal clear waters of the Papanasini River
running downhill add to the enchantment of the place.
Nagarhole Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka is 40 kms from Mananthavady.
Coorg
Coorg is in the south west of Karnataka bordering with Kerala. The small town of Mercara is the headquarters
of Coorg and lies approx. 125 kms away from Mysore. There is a temple built by Lingaraja in 1820, dedicated to
lord Siva. This Omkarareswara temple’s architecture is a mixture of Islamic and Gothic style. Coorg is having
the largest coffee estates, orange groves, pepper and cardomom farms. Main attractions are Fort, Raja’s Seat,
Raja’s Tomb and Sree Omkarshwara temple.
Ooty
This beautiful hill station is located at theNilgiri hills of Tamilnadu at 2240 m. above sea level.
Botanical Gardens: This beautiful garden is situated 1 km. Away from Ooty. The 50 acre garden includes
a variety of orchids, ornamental plants and trees, medicinal plants, coniferous trees and rock plants. During
April-May, the peak season, flower show and dog show are held here. Open 8 am to 6 pm.
Centenary Rose Park: located one km away from Bot. Garden, this park is run by the Tamilnadu
Horticultural department and has around 2150 varieties of roses in its garden.
Rose Garden: is one km away from Charing cross. It covers an area of 10 acrs inside Vijaya Nagar farm.
About 1900 varieties of roses are planted in this garden – open 8 am to 6 pm.Govt. Museum: on Mysore road, set up
in 1989. open except fri, second sat. and holidays 9 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5pm.
Deer Park: situated on the lake road, about 1 km from bus stand and railway station. The Deer Park
is an undulating ground of about 22 acrs of land housing mammals like Sambur, Chital and hares besides Water
Birds.
Doddabetta: Located 10 kms away from Ooty, it is the highest peak (2623 mts.) in the Nilgiries.
A microtelescope is also functioning here.
Kodaikanal
120 kms north west of Madurai. Kodai has more sunshine than any other Indian hill station. The town nestles
around the manmade Kodai Lake which spreads out in a star shape over sixty acres. Kodai has thickly wooded slopes,
well laid out walking path through picturesque prospects, tumultuous waterfalls and steep rock outdrops. Never
too hot in summer and never too cold in winter, though the best season bet. March and June and from Sept. and Oct.
Nov./Dec. is rainy season.
The Lake, skirted by a 5 kms long tarred road, Solar Physical Observatory (3.5 kms from the lake),
Bryant Park, Coaker’s walk, Kurunji Andavar Temple, Green Valley View,
Pillar Rocks, Shembaganur Natural History Museum (closed on Sundays) are other attractions.
Yercaud
This is a hill station where one does not feel the biting cold of winter. With such salubrious climate,
Yercaud can be visited the year round.
Yercaud Lake: It is a picturesque pool surrounded by gardens and well wooded trees. Boating in the cold waters of the lake is enchanting as well
as refreshing. Near the lake is The Anna Park
Killiyur Falls: this 300 ft. high water fall is situated amidst picturesquesurroundings.
