South India had been the hub of much political activities in the past and has witnessed the influx of various foreign powers, which settled down in various parts of the country. The St.Angelo's fort, Bekal Fort, Tippu's Fort etc. are built by these colonial powers talk volumes about the foreign influence on architecture.

Forts Tourism - Bekal

Thekkady Bekal is the largest fort in Kerala, approx. 200 kms. north Kozhikode. The fort nearly 16 hectares in extent virtually juts into the sea with a beautiful bay on its Southern side. The fortifications of the nearly 350 yr old semicircular construction with an imposing frontage are still intact as an architectural monument of the archaeological survey of India. At the entrance of the fort, one could see a mosque and a Hanuman Temple adjacent to each other as symbols of perfect religious harmony. The fort belonged in ancient times to the Kadampa dynasty and later under the Kolathiri Rajas and of Vijayanagar empire, Tipu Sultan captured it in the 18th century. There is a monumental place whereTipu Sultan lived and kept his sword prior to his overthrow by the English East India Company in 1799. The fort is situated at a height of 43 m above sea level facing the North. There is a large tower in the middle of the fort at a height of 10 m and with a circumference of 27 m; from this point one can see the entire Fort and beyond it the sea on the one side and lush green valley and undulating blue montains on the other side.

The Beach here is one of the most beautiful beaches in Kerala with a long strentch of sand and sun. It is ideal for sun bath.

Forts Tourism - Tipu's Fort

Thekkady The Tipu’s fort which dates back to 1766 AD is situated in the very heart of the town and is one of the best preserved forts in Kerala. It was constructed by HyderAli of Mysore. The fort was taken over by British in 1790 and is now protected by the Archeiological Survey of India.

Forts Tourism - Thalassery Fort

Thekkady Approx. 25 kms south of Kannur and 65 kms north of Kozhikode, lies Thalasseri where the British (English) East India Company established its settlement in 1683. The Thalasseri Fort here was built in the early 18th century. The German Scholar, Dr.Herman Gundert built a church on Neltur Hill in 1889.

Forts Tourism - Gingee Fort

Thekkady 150 kms. south east of Chennai in South Arcot district and close to Thindivanam, is famous for a marvelous seven hundred year old fort. The three hill fortresses are connected with heavy fortifications. The largest fort – Rajagiri- is built on a high hill over a 244 metre rocky precipie.

Forts Tourism - St. Angelo Fort

Thekkady The St. Angelo Fort built by the first Portuguese Viceroy in 1505 is a landmark of Kannur. The Fort is a massive triangular structure built on laterite with a ditch and strong flanking bastions. The Dutch captured the fort from Portuguese in 1663 and sold it to Ali Raja of Kannur in 1772 from whom it was captured by the British in 1790. The British rebuilt the fort and made it their most important military station in Malabar.

Forts Tourism - St.Thomas Mount

Thekkady This fort has great historical importance. The Apostle St. Thomas is believed to have been pierced to death here. The ‘Our Lady of Expectations’ church was built here in 1523 by Portuguese. An old stone Cross (called bleeding cross) with Sassanian Pehelevi inscriptions can be seen here.
